What a Plumbing invoice needs on it
A plumbing invoice should record the model installed and the date, because fixture warranties run from installation and the homeowner will not have kept the box. If you replaced a water heater, the invoice is also the document a home inspector will ask for at resale.
- Model and serial of what went in, with the commissioning date beside it
- The installation date itself, which is what a manufacturer asks for on a warranty claim
- Permit number and inspection result, the documents a home inspector asks for at resale
- Code upgrades actually performed, reconciled against the allowance you quoted
- Deposit credited and balance due, with your payment terms stated plainly

- A due date, not just terms — "Net 14" means less to a homeowner than a date

- How do I invoice code upgrades I quoted as an allowance?
- Show the allowance and the actual separately, so the arithmetic is visible. "Code upgrade allowance $400, actual $610, difference $210" reads as honest accounting. A single adjusted total with no explanation reads as a price increase, even when it is smaller.
- Should a plumbing invoice list the permit number?
- Yes, with the inspection result if it has happened. It costs you one line and it is the proof the work was permitted — which matters to the homeowner years later at resale, and to you if anyone ever questions whether the install was inspected.
