What a Carpentry quote needs on it

New work in a controlled space quotes as a fixed price: a deck to a drawn plan, a set of built-ins to measured dimensions, a run of trim in new construction. Fix the price on the material grade you named, and exclude finishing unless you are actually doing it.

  • The drawing or dimensions the price is fixed against, since new work quotes from a plan
  • Material grade and species, because the fixed price is fixed against what you named
  • Hardware: hinges, slides, fasteners — the parts that quietly add a day to a built-in
  • Whether painting, staining and finishing are included, because usually they are not
  • Disposal of removed material and site cleanup

And what every quote needs

Use a quote when you can see the whole job and control the variables: a like-for-like replacement, a measured area, a repeat job you have priced twenty times.

  • A tightly written scope — a fixed price is only safe if the scope is exact
  • Explicit exclusions, since anything unlisted is what a dispute will be about
  • A change-order clause saying how additional work gets priced and approved
  • An expiry date, because a fixed price cannot outlive your material costs

Questions

How should I price finish carpentry versus rough carpentry?
As different work at different rates. Rough framing is production work measured by the day; finish carpentry is fitting work measured by the piece, and the effective hourly rate is often half again as high because tolerances are tighter. Quoting both at a single "carpentry" rate reliably loses money on the finish half.
What carpentry work can be quoted as a fixed price?
New work in a controlled space: a deck to a drawn plan, a set of built-ins to measured dimensions, a run of trim in new construction. Fix the price on the material grade you named, and exclude finishing unless you are actually doing it. Work on existing structure belongs on an estimate until it is opened.
Should a built-in quote include the finish?
Only if you are doing it, and price it separately either way. Finishing a cabinet run is its own trade with its own day rate, and customers routinely assume a "finished" built-in arrives painted. Naming it as included or excluded on the quote settles that before the piece is installed bare.
