- Transitions, thresholds, stair nosings and quarter round, counted rather than assumed
- Acclimation time, because installing wood the day it arrives is how callbacks start
And what every quote needs
Use a quote when you can see the whole job and control the variables: a like-for-like replacement, a measured area, a repeat job you have priced twenty times.
- A tightly written scope — a fixed price is only safe if the scope is exact
- Explicit exclusions, since anything unlisted is what a dispute will be about
- A change-order clause saying how additional work gets priced and approved
- An expiry date, because a fixed price cannot outlive your material costs

- Who is responsible for moving furniture and appliances?
- Whoever the quote says, which is why it should say. Furniture moving, appliance disconnect and reconnect, and toilet pulls for bathroom flooring are all real labor. Price them or exclude them by name; leaving it unstated means you will do it for free on install day.
- When can flooring be quoted as a fixed price?
- On open floors with a measured area and a subfloor you have actually checked. Hold the price on material and install, and carry levelling as an allowance — that is the line that turns a fixed price from a gamble into a plan. Anything over existing tile or unknown adhesive belongs on an estimate.
- Should a quote include acclimation time?
- Say it, even though it is not a priced line. Wood and some LVP need days on site before installation, and a customer expecting a Tuesday install will not have planned for material sitting in their living room first. It is the scheduling detail that most often surprises people, and it costs one sentence.
