What a Handyman invoice needs on it
A handyman invoice should itemise what was actually done, including the items added on the day. Customers who booked five jobs and got seven need to see the two extra lines to understand the total — and an itemised small-job invoice is what turns a one-off call into a repeat customer.
- Time or price against each item, so a customer can see which job cost what
- Hours against the minimum, so a short visit reads as a policy rather than a surprise
- Materials with the markup or pickup fee you said you charge, matching what the estimate promised
- Anything referred out to a licensed trade, so the customer knows it is still outstanding
- Balance due and your payment terms

Send it the day the work is finished. Invoices sent within 24 hours get paid materially faster than ones that go out at the end of the month.
- A due date, not just terms — "Net 14" means less to a homeowner than a date

- How do I invoice a visit that came in under the minimum?
- Show the hours and show the minimum, as two lines. "Labor 0.75 hr; two-hour minimum applied" is a policy the customer already agreed to on the estimate. A flat charge with no explanation looks like a round-up, even when it is exactly what was promised.
- Should the invoice mention work I referred to a licensed trade?
- A line is worth it. The customer still has that job outstanding, and recording it as referred rather than silently dropping it both closes your scope cleanly and reminds them of something they will need to book. It is also the note that protects you if anyone later asks why it was not done.
